Can you describe your role within your organization?
I hold dual roles at the Tunisian Space Association (TUNSA). Initially, I was a part of the space law department, and now I have also taken on the role of Head of Strategic Relations.
How did you end up in space with your study/work background?
I joined TUNSA during my first year of a Master's degree in private law. Coincidentally, that same year, we co-organized the "Africa-Japan Cubesat Cooperation" event as part of Ticad8, where I served as the coordinator. I had the opportunity to interact with numerous space professionals, especially from Africa. I noticed that few had a legal background. As the space industry is rapidly evolving, I believe it's essential that regulations keep pace to create a robust ecosystem. This inspired me to focus my Master's thesis on "Liability in Space Law". However, I faced considerable challenges due to the lack of experts in this field in my country. Convincing my supervisor was tough (although I can't deny she has tried to help), and finding someone who could mentor me was even tougher. Despite these challenges and occasional negative feedback, I persevered and am proud to be among the pioneers in space law in my country.
What ambitions do you have for your space career?
One of my key objectives is to pave the way for the next generation in Africa and my home country. I don't want them to face the same challenges I did. I aim to establish a Master's degree in space law to facilitate this. Personally, my ambitions are diverse. As a research enthusiast, I aspire to become a professor, possibly the first in space law and policy in my country. Given my success in building strategic relationships and collaborations, I also envision a career in space diplomacy.
