Can describe how your job requires multidisciplinary skills?
My most recent role, VP of Revenue Operations, didn't require my engineering degree at all. My primary internal interfaces were with sales, marketing, finance, legal, communications, and government affairs. The most important skills I needed were communication, leadership, and business strategy.
What is the most fun in your job?
I have always enjoyed leading a team and creating a mini-culture. We made it really exciting to do the hard things (get contracts negotiated and payments in). A signed contract was rewarded with a cake that represented the effort (such as a three tiered cake to represent a three part contract) and payments were announced to anyone within earshot by honking rubber chickens (long story). It's also fun to watch the missions and launches, but it's the day-to-day things that make me smile most.
What advice would you give fellow non-tech space enthusiasts if they want to pursue a job in space?
I'd like to answer a different question, given that I am a hiring manager. "What do you look for most in the applicants for your roles?"
I typically try to post jobs that allow engineering degrees as an option, but that also welcome business, political science, and related degrees. I'm looking for people who have a background in handling tough situations, who have evidence of exercising business judgement, and who have a "get things done" mentality.
