How did you end up in space with your study/work background?
I was building my start-up in hospitality when I clicked on an add for a course about Exponential Technology. I did some research about the person behind it: Peter Diamandis. I immediately connected with the simple message: you need to understand what is coming and how is that going to impact your business. Ride the wave instead of getting crushed by it. So I dove into this ever expanding world of technology. AI, VR, AR, Robots, Blockchain, so on, and their connections into every industry (space, health, finance, manufacturing, etc). My mindset shifted completed. It shifted so much that I decided to jump into this new world and change my career.
The how to change my career was not completely obvious in the beginning. Growing up I never thought I would be working in space. We grow up hearing Humanity's accomplishments in space and very few business people emerge connected to them until Space X business case. This marks a clear point in time where Space industry came out of governments and into the private sphere. So, I remembered that Peter Diamandis had created a university for this exact purpose: to train professionals from all backgrounds into building careers in space. I went online and 2 months later I was in Adelaide, Australia with the International Space University to attend the Southern Hemisphere Space Studies Program. A purposefully intense 5 week program meant to transform your life.
The last day of the program, on the closing ceremony, the program director said that it was up to us to maintain this frenetic energy and continue what was started there. I did just that and 4 month later started as a Project Manager at Rocket Factory Augsburg.
How does your specific non-tech discipline or expertise add value to your organization?
I am working in a company that builds rockets. My daily world is surrounded by engineers and procurement specialists. My role is to see the big picture (goal, vision to attain) and: translate, build, and connect.
Translate the big vision into small actionable coherent set of tasks. Every day with every action you take, you can get one step closer to the goal specially if it is "goes wrong" and you integrate that learning. The fail fast methodology has being fueling the best companies worldwide.
Build bridges between where we are and where we want to go inside and outside of the company. Technology wise, people you meet, events you partake, so on. Here I can bring my knowledge of exponential technology and guide us to a better future. A future where we can do more with less. A sustainable and accessible space for all.
Connect the people. It is all about the people behind every achievement. Every individual has a unique way of thinking and communicating. It is about understanding this and being able to bring the best in each one of us. Having learnt how to meditate and how to de mindful is the key to succeeding here. In the last 6 years I upgraded my mindset with individual coach from Renata Cortês from Mindful Intelligence life.
What advice would you give fellow non-tech space enthusiasts if they want to pursue a job in space?
If you are reading this means you probably love space and that is independent of your professional background. Individuals from non traditional areas in the space industry are more needed now then ever. But you have to speak the language and understand the technology. So, I will say something everybody says: "do what you love" because it is true. Life is too short, we cannot afford not to do what we love. The trouble is how to figure what that is. Here I can only tell you my side of it. I was not one of those kids who wanted to be an astronaut from 5 years old, otherwise I would most likely be an engineer. I am more a John Lennon kind of person I wanted to be happy.
I followed my intuition and it led me to Business Administration. I constantly take courses, both in-person and online, in areas that I love and that are not necessarily clear to their role in my life. Meditation is not a direct professional course but its impact is far greater than other courses I've taken for example. Another area that expanded my way of thinking is Biomimicry. There are fascinating innovative examples coming out of this new field.
I create and prepare my transitions into different industries by staying updated in terms of education, and by keeping my mindset clean and lean. I am on a news diet, I am very careful with the content that I select, and I am very aware of the environments I am in and people that surround me.
